Saturday Morning Cartoons

with Nelson Hughes

Ever wish you were a little kid again? Well, now you can be, for one glorious Saturday morning! The Marx Brothers appeared in several kids’ cartoons, sometimes alongside other Hollywood stars, and often sharing the bill with some of our favorite animated characters. So set yourselves down, and let Nelson Hughes (film historian and creator of NYC’s long-running That Slapstick Show, and frequent co-presenter of Cartoon Carnival with film historian Tommy José Stathès) take you back to a time before you had to rise early for work and pay the bills. Enjoy an hour of cartoons the way they were meant to be seen, minus the commercials for sugared cereal.

The Marx Brothers: Vaudeville, Silent Film, and Broadway

with Trav S.D.

Trav S.D., author of numerous popular books on vaudeville and silent comedy, and director of the 2014 production of I’ll Say She Is, presents this multi-faceted and fun talk drawn from his brand-new offering, The Marx Brothers Miscellany. Learn how the world’s greatest comedy team could only have been born on the vaudeville stage; hear some well-informed speculation about the content of the lost Marx Brothers film Humor Risk; acquire a new appreciation for the lost art of Gummo; and take a grand illustrated tour of the Great Neck house where Groucho lived during the team’s Broadway period. A hodgepodge of historical hilarity as variegated as the vaudeville that was the wellspring of American show business.

The Animal Crackers Salon
